Wild summer and winter steelhead
from the Seymour River
are in desperate need of your support.
Brian Smith; Hatchery Manager/Seymour
Salmonid Society
To Whom It May Concern:
In 2002 the Seymour Salmonid Society
entered into a partnership with B.C. Fisheries and the
Greater Georgia Basin Steelhead Recovery program to
determine the state of steelhead stocks on the Seymour
River. After many snorkel counts and multiple juvenile
assessments, over a two year period, it was determined
that steelhead stocks on the Seymour River were at critically
low levels. One of the main reasons for the low abundance
of steelhead was determined to be the lack of suitable
habitat in the main stem of the Seymour River.
Knowing that steelhead populations on
the Seymour River were at critically low level and that
the lack of habitat was a limiting factor to rebuilding
populations, B.C. Fisheries hired Pat Slaney, MSc, and
RPBio, to develop a prescription for recovery of steelhead
populations on the Seymour River.
This report has been used to foster
a larger partnership, which includes the GVWD, DFO as
well as the Seymour Salmonid Society, Greater Georgia
Basin Steelhead Recovery Program and Provincial Fisheries.
The goal of this new partnership is to improve main
stem habitat for steelhead populations on the Seymour
River. For this reason we have decided to construct
a number of logjams and boulder clusters in the Seymour
River. These logjams and boulder clusters will be constructed
according to Pat Slaney’s report.
It should be noted that all partners
are able to contribute resources to the planned projects
for this summer in the manner of labour and materials.
Unfortunately we are still in need of additional funding
to pay for the equipment required (excavators, trucks,
cables, epoxy) in order to complete the project this
summer.
The lack of adequate funding is the
reason we are approaching your organization. All the
above stated partnersare hoping that you will be able
to financially support the project planned for the Seymour
River this year. We believe that once the project is
complete it will have beneficial effects for all fish
species found in the Seymour River. On behalf of all
the partners involved, I thank you for taking the time
to consider our request. If you require more information
or have questions please call me at the Seymour Hatchery

Sincerely;
